 Program Highlights for Vermont

What is Efficiency Vermont?

Created in 2000 by the Vermont legislature and the Vermont Public Service Board (PSB), Efficiency Vermont is the nation's first statewide provider of energy efficiency services. Operated by an independent, non-profit organization (Vermont Energy Investment Corporation), Efficiency Vermont provides technical advice, financial assistance, and design guidance to help Vermont homes, farms, and businesses become more energy efficient and reduce energy costs - actions that contribute to protecting Vermont's environment.

Efficiency Vermont is funded by an energy efficiency charge on each ratepayer's electric bill. Before Efficiency Vermont was created, the energy efficiency charge was used to pay for energy efficiency services formerly provided by each electric utility. (For Burlington Electric Department (BED) customers, the energy efficiency charge still pays for the energy efficiency services customers receive from BED.)

Results of Our Work

Our preliminary estimate of energy savings from measures installed in 2005, subject to the annual verification and adjustment process being conducted by the Vermont Department of Public Service (DPS) and PSB, is 20% higher than in 2004. Summer peak demand savings are estimated to have increased from 7.8 MW in 2004 to 10.2 MW in 2005, an increase of 30%.

While Efficiency Vermont spending increased only slightly in 2005, savings grew in greater proportion as we increased productivity and efficiency in providing energy efficiency services. We were able to increase our output (energy savings) by 20% with an increase of input (costs) of only 8%. We are proud of our results measured by this increase in “yield.”
