Program Highlights for Vermont
Efficiency Vermont
What is Efficiency Vermont?
Created in 2000 by the Vermont
legislature and the Vermont Public
Service Board (PSB), Efficiency
Vermont is the nation's first
statewide provider of energy
efficiency services. Operated by an
independent, non-profit organization
(Vermont Energy Investment
Corporation), Efficiency Vermont
provides technical advice, financial
assistance, and design guidance to
help Vermont homes, farms, and
businesses become more energy
efficient and reduce energy costs -
actions that contribute to
protecting Vermont's environment.
Efficiency Vermont is funded by
an energy efficiency charge on each
ratepayer's electric bill. Before
Efficiency Vermont was created, the
energy efficiency charge was used to
pay for energy efficiency services
formerly provided by each electric
utility. With the exception of
Burlington Electric Department (BED)
which still provides energy
efficiency services to its
customers, Efficiency Vermont now
works directly with ratepayers
throughout the state to reduce
energy demand.
Results of Our Work
- More savings than ever
before. Electric energy
savings achieved in 2008 were
150,000 MWh, a 45% increase over
2007.
- Reducing the load.
For the second year in a row,
savings from efficiency measures
more than offset the average
underlying rate of electricity
load growth.
- More savings in targeted
areas. Between July 2007 and
the end of 2008, in the state’s
four areas targeted for
accelerated savings, Winter Peak
electricity savings were
increased by 360%, and Summer
Peak savings were increased by
750%.
- A good buy for Vermont.
At a cost of only 2.9¢ /
kWh, efficiency remains
Vermont’s least-cost resource to
meet the electricity needs of
homes and businesses.
