Resources
for Exam Preparation and Achieving Certification
After training several hundred individuals to become
HERS raters, the Northeast HERS Alliance has developed resources and solutions
to empower individuals to pass the National Rater exam and work towards becoming
HERS raters.
Whether experienced in the weatherization field
or new to home performance, rater candidates are strongly encouraged that they
do some preparation for the National Rater exam.
- Practice exam
questions with an answer key are available at the links below, to give
rater applicants an idea of the type of technical knowledge needed to pass
the rater test.
- Reference Materials.
- A matrix of study
resources are available here.
- Residential Energy
by John Krigger: Because this book covers a lot of the basic technical
material and it is easy to find relevant information in it, the Krigger book
makes an excellent reference and is a highly recommended companion to
test-taking. NE HERS trainers feel that having Krigger’s book available to
each student during the exam has made a significant difference in the test
results of course participants. The book is available in both hardcopy or
download through:
www.srmi.biz/Bookstore.htm, or FREE to NE HERS rater training applicants
who postmark their application and 50% course fee deposit at least 28 days
prior to the start date of your class.
- Feedback on the rater
training exam: After the completion of the online National Rater exam,
students will immediately be able to see the results of their test by
category of question.
- Consultation may
be available and charged by the hour to rater candidates who fail the rater
exam through an accredited Provider’s QA Designee or from an Alliance
trainer. Prior to receiving this consultation and prior to re-taking the
exam, rater candidates are encouraged to review his or her areas of weakness
on the exam, and review the practice exam questions and other study
resources such as John Krigger’s book.
As the demand for HERS
raters increases in the Northeast, we hope that these tools and study
options will result in paving the way for more rater candidates to
successfully complete the requirements for rater certification.
