Resources
for Exam Preparation and Achieving Certification
After training almost 100
individuals to become HERS raters,
the Northeast HERS Alliance has
developed resources and solutions to
empower individuals as they work
towards becoming HERS raters. There
are three primary uses for these
resources: 1) ensuring that students
can prepare for rater training, 2)
setting expectations for passing the
rater exam or challenge test; and 3)
remedial work by rater candidates
who do not receive a passing grade
on the rater exam or challenge test.
- Practice exam
questions with answer keys are available below to give rater applicants
a clear idea of the level of technical knowledge needed to pass the rater
test.
- Reference Materials.
- Building Science
reference. Rater candidates are strongly encouraged to bring a copy of
"Residential Energy" by John Krigger to the rater exam, and even to
review before attending rater training. This book covers a lot of the
basic technical material and it is easy to find relevant information in
it during the exam. Trainers feel that having Krigger's book available
during the exam has made a significant difference in the test results of
course participants. Applicants who send a deposit at least 4 weeks
prior to class will receive one for free, and the book is also available
through:
www.srmi.biz/bookstore.html.
- A list of additional
reference materials from a variety of sources
- Feedback on the rater
training exam: It is standard NEHERS procedure for the trainers to give
feedback to all students who do not pass the test about the areas of the
test that were weak.
- Consultation is
available and charged by the hour through Alliance trainers to rater
candidates who fail the rater exam. Prior to receiving this consultation and
prior to taking the exam over, rater candidates are encouraged to: ask the
Alliance trainer for feedback specifying his or her areas of weakness on the
exam, independently review the practice exam questions and answer key, and
also use the Krigger book to hone his or her knowledge in these areas.
As the demand for HERS raters increases in the Northeast, we hope that
these tools and study options will result in paving the way for more rater
candidates to successfully complete the requirements for rater
certification.
